When you visit Indonesia, you must try the market snacks. In Indonesian, the term is called ‘jajanan pasar’ and the choice is plenty. For now, let’s look at what’s called keripik.
Keripik or kripik means crackers or chips. There are many varieties of sweet and savoury ones made from fruits and vegetables. The street vendor on the pictures above sells many types from purple potato chips, fried banana chips, durian chips and many more. The ones he was bagging for me though, is called Keripik Tempe.
Keripik Tempe is made from fermented soybeans which are traditionally sold in banana leaf. Originated from Bandung, it is made from deep frying thinly sliced tempe which are coated in savoury batter.
A good source of protein, tempe also contains probiotic, vitamin B3 which helps to reduce cholesterol level, calcium, manganese to help with diabetes and many more.
